Nux-Vomica Poisoning of an Habitueé

چکیده
Sib,?The following account of fatal poisoning' of Nux Vomica habituee may prove interesting to your readers :? Madiga Chennoogadoo, a sweeper by occupation, aged about 25, well built, was brought to the Badval Civil Dispensary, at 11 A.M. on the 12th of March last, with the following history :?Occasionally he had been in the habit of eating two seeds of Strychnos Nux Vomica at a time to get himself intoxicated. This particular morning, at about 7 a.m., he had gone to the jungle to fetch firewood, where he ate four fruits. At 9 A.M. he returned to town, and when he was sweeping the street fell down insensible. He was then carried home, where he occasionally suffered from tetanic convulsions and was brought speedily to hospital. I gave him 20-grain dose of Zinc Sulphate at once, and ten minutes after an enema of tobacco. Fifteen minutes after the administration of the emetic he began to vomit with much exertion pieces of the fruit. The act of emesis seemed to induce the spasm. Well-marked opisthotonos set in, the body being arched like a bow. The spasms

A rare case of strychnine poisoning by consumption of Strychnos nux- vomica leaves
Strychnine is one of the oldest poisons known to man. The source of this potent toxin is the Strychnos nux-vomica plant, which actually contains two distinct alkaloidsstrychnine and brucine. Although principally found in the seeds, these alkaloids can be isolated in varying concentrations from virtually all parts of the plant including the bark, leaves and roots[1]. Once consumed, strychnine pr...

متن کاملA rare case of brucine poisoning complicated by rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure.
Brucine is the predominant alkaloid present in the bark of the tree Strychnos nux vomica and is a weaker alkaloid when compared to strychnine. However, its toxicological property is akin to strychnine. We report a rare case of brucine poisoning complicated by acute renal failure and rhabdomyolysis. A 24-year-old male presented with a history of consumption of a decoction made from the bark of t...
متن کاملOnline Monitoring for Strychnos Nux-vomica Parching in Sands and Chemical Compositional Analysis by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography - Linear Trap Quadrupole -Orbitrap- Mass Spectrometry
Purpose: To provide an online and non-contact method to monitor the dynamic temperature of the nuxvomica parching in sands, and also to develop a rapid screening and comparison of the compounds in crude and processed nux-vomica. Methods: Seeds of nux-vomica were parched in sands by an herbal medicine roaster with an onlinetype and non-contact temperature measurement system (ONTMS). Processing w...
متن کاملStrychnos nux-vomica seeds: Pharmacognostical standardization, extraction, and antidiabetic activity
BACKGROUND Strychnos nux-vomica, commonly known as kuchla, contains strychnine and brucine as main constituents. Minor alkaloids present in the seeds are protostrychnine, vomicine, n-oxystrychnine, pseudostrychnine, isostrychnine, chlorogenic acid, and a glycoside. Seeds are used traditionally to treat diabetes, asthma, aphrodisiac and to improve appetite. OBJECTIVE The present study was aime...
